This week, I found myself on the patio with my laptop, a cup of coffee, and the doodles settled around me.
The laptop was not cooperating. The screen was doing something I did not understand, and I was once again reminded that building Breaking Barriers has required me to become a beginner in more ways than I expected.
I am comfortable leading through complicated situations. I know how to ask the right questions, find the real problem, and create order from chaos.
But learning new technology, building a website, producing a podcast, and creating a newsletter from scratch? That has humbled me.
There have been wrong buttons, wrong images, broken links, and plenty of things that looked finished until I saw them on my phone.
I am learning not to see those moments as proof that I cannot do this. They are proof that I am doing something new.
Friday’s Coffee on the Patio reflection is called Sometimes You Have to Build It Wrong First.
It is about the vulnerability of being seen while you are still learning and the way perfection can become a very convincing hiding place.
Sometimes the wrong version is not evidence that we failed to prepare. Sometimes it is the preparation.

This week, Takara Fuller-Doby turned the microphone around and asked me why I started Breaking Barriers.
What began as my origin story became an honest conversation about mentorship, confidence, boundaries, rest, leadership, and learning to use your voice.
In many ways, this podcast is another first version. It is personal, imperfect, and part of what I am still building.
Choose one thing you have been overthinking.
Create the first version.
Write the opening paragraph. Test the process. Make the invitation. Start the conversation.
Do not ask the first version to be perfect. Ask it to teach you something.
What could I learn if I gave myself permission to build the first version?
“Do not despise these small beginnings.” Zechariah 4:10
Small beginnings are still beginnings. Imperfect progress is still progress.
This week, give yourself permission to learn while you build.
Ask Better Questions. Lead with Courage. Keep Breaking Barriers.
