SHEILA’S NOTEBOOK

A productive day and one honest conversation became a reminder that uncertainty drains us, while clarity restores confidence and creates momentum.

Sheila Greene sits outside on her back patio in a dark tee shirt with one hand behind her head, talking to the camera. Behind her are a wooden privacy fence, a red hummingbird feeder, tall sunflowers, and green garden plants in warm late day light.

Yesterday was one of the most productive days I’ve had in a long time.

I completed our year-to-date ownership report, analyzed data from multiple angles, prepared for budget discussions, and got ahead on several priorities that had been sitting on my desk for weeks.

By any measure, it was a successful day.

But the biggest accomplishment wasn’t the report.

It was a conversation.

For the last several weeks, I had been carrying around a level of stress that I couldn’t quite shake. Like many leaders, I was operating in a space filled with unanswered questions. Questions about expectations. Questions about performance. Questions about where I stood.

Nothing had actually happened.

There wasn’t a crisis.

No one had called to deliver bad news.

But uncertainty has a way of filling in the blanks when information is missing.

When Uncertainty Fills the Blanks

The human brain hates ambiguity. When we don’t know the answer, we create one. And unfortunately, the stories we create are often much worse than reality.

As leaders, we spend a tremendous amount of time solving problems, putting out fires, navigating difficult situations, and making decisions with incomplete information. We become comfortable with pressure.

What Actually Drains Me

What I’ve learned about myself is that pressure doesn’t drain me.

Hard work doesn’t drain me.

Distressed properties don’t drain me.

Budget challenges don’t drain me.

Turnaround plans don’t drain me.

What drains me is not knowing where I stand.

Yesterday’s conversation brought clarity. Expectations were discussed. Questions were answered. Assumptions were replaced with facts.

And almost immediately, I felt lighter.

Not because every challenge disappeared.

Not because all the work was done.

But because clarity creates confidence.

The moment I knew where things stood, I was able to stop spending energy on possibilities and start spending energy on execution.

Clarity Creates Momentum

That’s the trap uncertainty creates.

It convinces us that we need more time to think when what we really need is more information.

Many of the conversations we avoid are the exact conversations that would give us peace.

We delay asking the question.

We postpone the difficult discussion.

We convince ourselves that we’ll deal with it later.

Meanwhile, our minds work overtime filling in the gaps.

The leadership lesson I walked away with is simple:

Uncertainty creates noise. Clarity creates momentum.

A Path Forward

If you’re carrying around a question that is consuming mental energy, don’t let it linger. Have the conversation. Ask for feedback. Verify the assumption. Seek the facts.

You may discover that the thing you’ve been worrying about isn’t nearly as heavy as you’ve imagined.

And even if the answer isn’t what you hoped for, clarity still gives you something uncertainty never can:

A path forward.

Yesterday reminded me that leadership isn’t just about solving problems.

Sometimes it’s about having the courage to seek clarity.

And when you do, you’ll often find that confidence was waiting for you on the other side of the conversation.
