I Lost My Job the Day I Chose My Standard

FEBRUARY 25, 2026 · SHEILA GREENE

I once believed endurance equaled leadership. Losing my job taught me that leadership is not about what you can survive. It is about what you refuse to normalize.

Sheila Greene reflecting on the leadership standard that changed her career

There was a season in my career when I believed endurance equaled leadership.

I was a VP of Operations. I had built an incredible team. We were performing. We were successful. On paper, everything looked strong.

The problem wasn’t the work.

It was the environment.

What I Thought Strength Looked Like

Our CEO created a culture of intimidation. It was unpredictable. Heavy. The kind of leadership that keeps everyone slightly on edge.

And instead of leaving, I stayed.

I told myself I was protecting my team.

I absorbed the pressure. I redirected his focus toward me so he wouldn’t target them. I managed morale while managing performance. I carried the emotional weight so they could keep producing results.

At the time, I thought that was strength.

If I could handle him, it meant I was doing my job well.

But endurance is not the same as leadership.

The Moment Everything Changed

One day, something shifted.

I looked at our VP of HR and said words that changed everything:

“We should be ashamed of ourselves.”

We were senior women in leadership. And we were allowing him to treat us this way in front of our employees.

Young women were watching us.

Learning what was acceptable.

In that moment, I knew filing a formal complaint would cost me my job.

I had teenagers.

A mortgage.

I was helping take care of my mom.

This was not a theoretical risk.

It was real.

And I did it anyway.

Terrified, but Aligned

I stood up to him.

And I lost my job.

I didn’t feel brave.

I felt terrified.

But I also felt aligned.

For the first time in a long time, I wasn’t managing optics. I wasn’t absorbing dysfunction. I wasn’t negotiating my values.

I was clear.

Here’s what surprised me:

When I stepped into my next company, my entire team followed me.

I thought I had been holding them up.

Turns out, we had built something stronger than fear.

The Standard I Chose

That experience changed how I lead forever.

I swore that day no one working for me would ever feel that small again.

Leadership is not about how much you can endure.

It is about what you normalize.

It is about what you allow in front of the people watching you.

This wasn’t the day I lost my job.
It was the day I chose my standard.

Sometimes the promotion isn’t a title.

It’s alignment.

Now I’m CEO.

And no one in my organization has to armor up to survive.

The Harder Question

What are you currently tolerating in the name of loyalty?

What are you absorbing because you think endurance equals strength?

And who is watching you decide what’s acceptable?

The people behind you are learning from what you allow.

Choose carefully.
