Some weeks, it can feel like every loose end eventually lands in the same place: your desk, your inbox, your head. The small tasks pile up beside the big decisions, and before long, you’re wondering how you became responsible for all of it.

I’ve been thinking about that this week. There’s a difference between being willing to help and becoming the permanent owner of every unfinished task. One is leadership. The other can quietly become a habit that keeps everyone else from growing.

Delegation doesn’t mean handing something off and disappearing. It means being clear about the outcome, the person responsible, and when you’ll check back. It means making sure someone has what they need, then giving them room to do the work. If the task comes back to you unfinished, the answer isn’t always to take it over. Sometimes the better next step is to ask what got in the way and what support would help them finish it.

That can be uncomfortable, especially when you know you could do it faster yourself. But speed isn’t the only measure of good leadership. A team that depends on one person to keep every detail moving is a team with too few people carrying the responsibility. Clear ownership gives people a chance to build confidence, judgment, and follow-through.

And this lesson reaches beyond the office. Our days are full of people and responsibilities that matter. We can care deeply and still recognize that we aren’t meant to carry every piece alone. Pausing long enough to decide what’s truly ours can make us more present for the work and the people in front of us.

A Better Question

What can I set down because the right person is ready to carry it?

Sheila’s Challenge

Choose one task you’ve been holding onto. Name the owner, explain the next step, agree on a check-in, and let them do it. Trust is built through those everyday moments of ownership.

Have a wonderful weekend. Keep breaking barriers.
